How to putty clay wallsJanuary 28, 2018
Clay since ancient times was used as a building material, along with sand. But, unlike sand, it has a greater elasticity, and for this reason it often appeared as an independent material for covering walls, ceiling and floor. To enhance it, various components of natural origin — chips, crushed plant stems, etc. — were added. Over claythe surface was covered with natural white, or, in the case of floors, self-made impregnation of soot.
It is clear that the described method of finishing is practically not used in our time, but there are situations when an old clay house in the village is inherited, which may well go under the cottage. Financial capabilities do not always allow to build a new structure, so you have to deal with the restoration of what is. The simplest approach to decorating clay walls inside a house is to apply putty, after all, to start repairs in the “old-fashioned” way, using clay is a rather painstaking task.
Stages of finishing clay wall putty:
1. Preparing the wall.As a rule, in arranging the walls in clay houses, a grading method was used - a small reinforcing wooden plank was stuffed on a wooden frame, and clay was spread on them. After drying, the walls, as a rule, were whitened. When preparing you need to carefully remove all whitewash. To do this, you can apply the method of erosion, this is when the whitewashing is simply blurred over the surface with warm water using a large brush. Scratching of a moistened whitewash with a sharp scraper or trowel looks more reliable. At the same time, the layer of whitewashing itself and the surface ball attached to it are soaked with clay. The work is very dusty and delicate, as it is important to snatch the clay to a great depth, removing a layer of 2-3mm. Areas where the wall has lost its fortress and whole fragments of clay fall out, you need to carefully get rid of all poorly holding fragments. After all the whitewash is removed, the base is abundantly saturated with a deep penetration primer. You can even apply the spray method, abundantly moistening the wall with a primer using a spray gun.
2. Elimination of defects. After the primer has dried, it is necessary to seal off medium and large flaws with the help of starting putty. If there are extensive dumped areas that even shingles are visible, you can apply plasterboard pieces to seal them, sticking them on the starting putty. When working on clay walls, it is best to use dry gypsum mixtures. If there are deep cracks, they must first be embroidered, and sealed with starter mortar, using reinforcing serpyanka.
3. Putty. This process is no different from the putty of any other wall, with the only difference that the clay wall is usually covered with small irregularities after the whitening of the whitewash. Therefore, it will not be superfluous to glue a continuous paint grid with a small gap onto the first putty layer.
4. Elimination of yellowness. As a rule, yellow stains and stains may appear on top of dried plaster, as the plaster pulls on itself the substance of the base. Therefore, it is best to bleach such places with simple liquid whiteness, brushing these areas with a brush once or several times, until the spots completely disappear. During this procedure, care must be taken to ventilate the room.
