So, the author acquaints the reader with the protagonist of the work by the name Adrian Prokhorov - the undertaker. He moved from Basmannaya Street to Nikitskaya Street. Settles in a long-cherished house. However, he does not feel joy. The novelty of it a little scares. Soon, however, the new house establishes the order. The sign is attached above the gate. Adrian, sitting at the window, orders him to serve him a samovar. While drinking tea, the hero plunged into a thoughtful sadness, for he had a grim character from nature. He was troubled by worldly concerns.
Further in the story "Undertaker" Pushkin tells, that mainly the thoughts of the hero were occupied by the rich merchant-woman Tryukhina. She was dying in Razguliai. The hero was thinking about whether the successors would remember him or make arrangements with the nearest contractor. While Adrian was pondering, a German artisan-neighbor came to visit him. He called himself Gottlieb Shultz - a shoemaker. He noted that he lives across the street. I invited Adrian to my place, because tomorrow he had a silver wedding. The hero accepted the invitation. He offered Schulz a cup of tea. As a result, the neighbors began to talk, and soon became friends. The next afternoon, Adrian and a couple of his daughters went to visit the shoemaker. The Germans-artisans-Schultz's friends, as well as their wives-gathered in the house. The feast began. Soon the owner proclaimed a toast to the health of Louise - his wife and guests. The fact is that the hero considered his work as inferior to others, arguing that the undertaker is not a brother. Adrian then decided to invite his clients to a housewarming party. His worker, upon learning about this, offered the hero to cross himself.
