Which scientist is considered the first astronomer?

In ancient times, people did not have specialdevices for studying the universe. Imagine how we would observe the movement of the sun, the change of stars and the moon without equipment. So who can be considered the first astronomer, who noted the cyclical nature of celestial phenomena.

The first steps in the comprehension of the universe were madeancient Greek astronomers. Of course, it is very difficult now to assess how astronomy originated, but from the myths of different peoples of the world it is clear that people knew about the moon, the sun and the planets. Initially, the world was divided into two parts: the heavenly, and the earth, and the stars were attached to the firmament. Now everyone knows that the Earth itself is a heavenly body, but then it was difficult to understand and it was perceived as the center of a universe that does not move.

A huge contribution to astronomy was made by the ancientthe Greeks. In their myths one can trace attempts and aspirations to explain the whole picture of the world, to connect the phenomena of nature with each other. So, which of the scientists is considered the first astronomer? We will mention such names as Thales and Anaximander, who were the first to comprehend the universe and its connections. Seven and a half centuries passed and Claudius Ptolemy created a mathematical theory of the motion of the stars. Astronomers of antiquity relied on the knowledge obtained in Babylon, long before themselves. The difference was in the methods of processing such data, that is, new mathematical methods were already used. Then they were taken into service by medieval Arab astronomers, and later by European astronomers.

Somewhere an exact statement is given which of the scientistsis considered the first astronomer. It is written that Cleostratus of Tenedos was the first observant astronomer. He lived in the 6th century BC. Such a conclusion is made thanks to the sources that have survived to this day, where it is said that Cleostrat observed the celestial part of the world from Mount Ida, located on the island of Crete. And it is he who is credited with the authorship of the poem "Astrology." Unfortunately, the name of the pupil Cleostratus is not known, but he is famous for the fact that in Greece he specified the length of the tropical year. At the time, as we mentioned, many scientists were engaged in astronomy. The same Thales is known to us from the fact that he studied the sun and found a new constellation - the Little Dipper. And his pupil Anaximander created in Greece the first gnomon and tried to make a celestial globe. It was Anaximander who built the first sundial.

Actually, astronomy as a science became closeAristotle studied the structure of the universe. The philosopher called it a vast space, which has no center or boundaries. Heavenly bodies in the universe, in his opinion, moved in a circle and consisted of ether.
